BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today submitted his nomination paper to Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Ishrat Farzana to contest the 13th national parliamentary election from the Thakurgaon-1 constituency.
After submitting the nomination at the district administration office, Mirza Fakhrul told reporters that the people of Bangladesh want their voting rights restored.
Calling on voters to support him in the upcoming election, he urged them to cast their ballots in favour of the BNP's 'sheaf of paddy' symbol.
He said that if elected, he would work to accelerate local development, improve the social environment, upgrade educational institutions, strengthen the socio-economic system, expand economic activities and ensure the fundamental rights of the people.
Prior to submitting his nomination, Mirza Fakhrul joined a prayer at the district BNP office.
Describing the election as "crucial", he said the polls would determine whether a liberal democratic system could be established in the country.
Under such a system, he said, men and women would enjoy equal dignity and rights, and a harmonious environment would be ensured for people of all faiths, including Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists and Christians.
Among those present during the programmes were district BNP president Mirza Faisal Amin, general secretary Poygum Ali, and Thakurgaon municipality BNP president Shariful Islam.
