Two people, including a man and a young woman, were killed after being hit by a train in the Uttara area of the capital late Saturday night.
The deceased were identified as Nazmul Islam, 34, and Antora, 22. The accident occurred in the Uttara House Building area on the night of Saturday (27 December).
Nazmul Islam hailed from West Anantapur village under Begumganj upazila of Noakhali district and was the son of Nur Nabi. He had been living in the Tongi area of Gazipur. Antora was from Netrokona district. Both were employed at a private company.
Confirming the incident, Sub-Inspector Md Abdur Razzak of the Airport Police Outpost under Dhaka Railway Police said the two were returning home from work when the accident took place.
“While they were walking along the railway line on their way home, they were hit from behind by the Cox’s Bazar Express train. Antora died on the spot,” the police official said.
Nazmul Islam sustained critical injuries and was first taken to a nearby hospital. He was later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead around 12:00am.
The police official added that Antra’s body was handed over to her family without a post-mortem examination, following a request from her relatives. Nazmul’s body, however, has been kept at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Nazmul’s nephew, Sakib Alam, said a railway line runs alongside his uncle’s workplace. “He was walking along the railway track while returning home from the office when the accident occurred,” he added.
Police said further legal procedures are underway in connection with the incident.
