Two individuals were detained on charges of assaulting a police officer at Chattogram's Patenga Sea Beach for "barring a group of young men from consuming marijuana" last night.
The attackers also attempted to snatch his mobile phone, wallet, and wireless radio, police said.
The detainees were identified as Tafsir Imam, 25, and Md Saimun, 27, from Pabna.
According to police sources, the incident took place around 11:30pm near Charpara Ghat in Patenga.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Yusuf Ali of Patenga Police Station, was on duty in uniform when he noticed a group of young men consuming marijuana on the beach.
When he confronted them, they admitted their mistake, apologised, and left the scene. However, about an hour later, the same group returned with additional people. As SI Yusuf Ali was heading toward his patrol vehicle, they surrounded him, wanted to see his ID card, accusing him of being a fake police officer.
The situation quickly escalated, and the group physically assaulted him, taking away his walkie-talkie, mobile phone, and wallet.
A video recorded at the scene shows SI Yusuf visibly distressed, with his uniform disheveled. A crowd gathered, and some people were seen questioning the attackers after detaining them.
Confirming the incident, Deputy Police Commissioner (Port Zone) Badrul Alam Molla told that, "They organised a mob and attacked the SI after he barred them from consuming drugs. They orchestrated the incident by accusing the SI of being a fake officer. They also attempted to snatch his walkie-talkie, wallet, and mobile phone. Local residents and other police members managed to detain them on the spot."
He added that police recovered a motorcycle and a small knife from the suspects.
"A case is in the process of being filed," he said.
