Candidates recommended for appointment as assistant teachers in government primary schools but yet to receive appointment letters staged a sit-in in Shahbagh in Dhaka on Sunday, demanding immediate appointment.The protesters gathered in front of Dhaka University Central Library in the morning and later marched towards Shahbagh police station at about 11:00am, where they began the sit-in.
They said that they had completed the recruitment process and were among the 14,384 candidates finally recommended for appointment, but many had yet to receive their letters.
Appointment letters for the finally recommended candidates began to be issued on September 24. The protesters claimed that about 1,000 candidates had not received letters after the verification process.
There had also been allegations that around 1,000 candidates were excluded from the appointment process in the name of intelligence agency verification, they said.
The written examination for the recruitment was held simultaneously in 61 districts, excluding the three hill districts, on January 9 this year. A total of 69,265 candidates who passed the written examination were selected for viva voce.
The final results were published on February 8, with 14,384 candidates selected for appointment. District-wise lists of the selected candidates were also published.
Meanwhile, minister for education and primary and mass education ministry ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon on Saturday urged all concerned not to create confusion over the appointment process through the media and social media.
At a meeting on the Assistant Teacher Recruitment-2025 at the ministry, he said candidates who had successfully completed the process but did not receive appointment letters by October 1 would have their cases examined and letters issued in phases at the earliest possible time.
The meeting was also informed that verification and vetting were regular procedures in the recruitment of government officials and employees.
