National Fisheries Week Begins in Madhupur with Rally and Discussion

National Fisheries Week was inaugurated in Tangail’s Madhupur through a rally, discussion meeting and award distribution ceremony with the slogan “Rupali Motshye Shonirbhor Desh, Shobar Age Bangladesh” (Self-reliant country with silver fish, Bangladesh first).

On Sunday morning (August 16), the Madhupur Upazila Administration and the Senior Upazila Fisheries Office organized a rally at the Upazila Parishad complex marking the inauguration of National Fisheries Week. Later, a discussion meeting was held at the Upazila Parishad meeting room.

The discussion meeting was chaired by Madhupur Upazila Fisheries Officer Md. Atiyar Rahman, while Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Saiful Islam attended the event as the chief guest.

Special guests included Madhupur Upazila BNP President Md. Zakir Hossain Sarkar, Senior Vice-President M. Ratan Haider, Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Shahiduzzaman, Upazila Food Controller Officer Sohana Bilkis, Upazila Academic Supervisor Mohiuddin Ahmad, Upazila Family Planning Officer Ujjal Bairagi and Upazila Rural Development Officer Mustafizur Rahman. Officials from different government departments, fishers and fish farmers were also present at the event.

In the discussion meeting, speakers said that the fisheries sector plays an important role in the country’s economy, nutrition and food security. They emphasized the importance of conserving fisheries resources, increasing the production of native fish species, ensuring proper management of water bodies and promoting modern scientific methods in fish farming.

They also called for creating awareness against illegal fishing and protecting natural breeding grounds of native fish to ensure sustainable development of the fisheries sector.

Later, awards were handed over to two successful fish farmers and individuals in recognition of their special contributions to the fisheries sector. The event highlighted the importance of cooperation among local administration, fish farmers and the community to preserve and further develop fisheries resources.
