Presidential election: Nomination papers to be scrutinized today

The nomination papers of BNP and like-minded parties’ candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 11-party alliance candidate Col. Oli Ahmad (Retd.), chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), will be scrutinized on Sunday (August 16) for the presidential election.

The Election Commission (EC) said the scrutiny will begin at 10am at the office of the Chief Election Commissioner at the Election Building.

EC Secretary Akhter Ahmed said the returning officer, the Chief Election Commissioner, will scrutinize the nomination papers from 10am. The process will continue until all the papers are examined.

He said a total of three nomination papers have been submitted. Two were submitted for 11-party alliance candidate Oli Ahmed and one for BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

A representative from the Parliament Secretariat will also be present during the scrutiny of the nomination papers.

According to the election schedule, the deadline for withdrawal of candidature is 4pm on August 18. The 23rd presidential election will be held on August 20.
