Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said politics should be about serving the people, not creating confusion.
Urging opposition political parties to work for the people instead of engaging in disruptive activities, he said, “Abandon the politics of vandalism and creating disorder by sitting on streets, and work for the people. If you have any practical plan to resolve the fuel or power crisis, present it before the people. If your plan can solve the problem within six months, the government will gladly implement it.”
He made the remarks on Saturday while addressing a program at T&T Ground in Mohakhali, Dhaka, where checks were distributed among underprivileged, distressed and sick people, followed by a doa mahfil marking the 82nd birth anniversary of late Begum Khaleda Zia.
On the government’s healthcare mega-project at the upazila level, the Prime Minister said, “We have decided to convert each of the 503 upazila hospitals across the country into 151-bed facilities within the next five years. This will enable ordinary people, particularly mothers and children, to receive improved healthcare services in their own localities.”
He said, “In the past, healthcare was controlled in such a way that people were compelled to go abroad for treatment, but the present government is determined to bring healthcare services to people’s doorsteps.”
Expressing regret to the people over the country’s ongoing power and gas shortages, the Prime Minister said, “The fascist government left behind nearly Tk3 lakh crore in debt in the power sector and did not develop the infrastructure needed for fuel imports. After assuming office, we instructed BAPEX to explore for gas within the country. A temporary problem has arisen after an LNG vessel was damaged in an accident, but it will be possible to overcome the situation soon.”
Criticizing the recent forms of protest adopted by some political parties, Tarique Rahman said, “Some parties are seen protesting with lanterns in front of them, while fans are running behind them. People no longer appreciate such recklessness. When people were subjected to persecution and faced enforced disappearances and killings for 17 years, these leaders were not seen on the streets.”
Speaking about his vision for the future, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said, “The 20 crore people of Bangladesh have 40 crore hands, and we have to transform those hands not into the hands of laborers, but into the hands of skilled workers. What I get for myself is not the most important thing; what matters most is what I can do for the country and its people.”
At the end of his speech, he pledged to build Bangladesh into a prosperous nation on the world stage by following the ideals of martyred President Ziaur Rahman and the path of patriotism shown by Begum Khaleda Zia.
