Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday said the government is working to ensure better healthcare services for poor and marginalized people across the country.
He made the remarks while addressing a discussion after inaugurating the newly expanded 500-bed building of the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital in Agargaon, Dhaka.
“Technology can identify diseases, but there is no substitute for doctors’ humane behaviour in reassuring patients and understanding their fear, anxiety and mental distress,” he said.
He also called for combining modern medical technology with skilled manpower, good governance and, importantly, empathy to build a healthcare system that is accessible, affordable and quality-driven for all.
The prime minister said doctors and healthcare workers should listen attentively to patients, understand their mental condition and treat them with respect and compassion
He said that the government has paid special attention to child health. The government will inaugurate five specialized hospitals next October. The success of health and medical services depends on the role of everyone in the relevant sectors.
Earlier, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the expanded 500-bed new building of the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital. At the same time, the head of government also participated in prayers and supplications.
Later, the Prime Minister planted saplings in the hospital premises. At that time, the Prime Minister was accompanied by his wife, eminent physician Dr. Zubaida Rahman.
