The Appellate Division's Chamber Court has ordered retired army personnel Hafizur Rahman to surrender within 24 hours after staying a High Court order that granted him bail in the murder case of Comilla Victoria Government College student Sohagi Jahan Tonu.

Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Md Rezaul Haque passed the order today (6 August).

The court also directed law enforcement agencies to arrest Hafizur if he fails to surrender within the stipulated time.

Earlier on 2 August, a High Court bench comprising Justice Zakir Ahmed and Justice Sathika Hossain granted bail to Hafizur after a hearing.

He was released from Cumilla Central Jail on the evening of 4 August following the bail order.

The release drew criticism on social media, after which the state filed a petition before the Chamber Court seeking cancellation of his bail.

Tonu, a second-year student of the History Department at Comilla Victoria Government College, was found dead near the college's Cumilla Cantonment area on 20 March 2016. Her murder sparked widespread protests across the country.
