A man was beaten to death and 10 others were injured in a clash between two rival groups in Harinakundu upazila of Jhenaidah this morning.

Deceased Mosharraf Hossain, 45, was general secretary of the village mosque committee.

Police and locals said that there was a long-standing dispute between Mosharraf and Dabir Mandal, who live in the same village.

Harinakundu Police Station's Officer-in-charge (OC) MA Rouf Khan said that they locked into an altercation yesterday during a meeting on organising a religious gathering at the village.

As a sequel to the incident, a clash ensued between the two groups in the morning, leaving Mosharraf and 10 other people injured, the OC added.

The injured were taken to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared Mosharraf dead. The others were admitted to the hospital, said Mahbubul Alam, a physician at the hospital's emergency department.

OC Rouf Khan said a person named Mohin was detained in this connection.

Police were deployed at the scene to control the situation, he added.
