The prime accused in the case filed over the rape and murder of Ramisa Akter in Dhaka’s Pallabi area, Sohel Rana, and co-accused Swapna Khatun have given statements in their defence.

The court of Judge Masrur Salequin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Children Violence Prevention Tribunal examined the accused under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code on Wednesday.

The court later fixed Thursday (4 June) for hearing final arguments in the case.

The accused were brought to court from jail around 8am and were first kept at the lock-up of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court. They were later produced before the court around 10:45am, and the hearing began at around 11:10am.

During the hearing, the judge read out the testimonies of witnesses to the accused and asked whether they had anything to say in their defence.

Sohel Rana claimed he was innocent and said the person named “Dollar”, who was allegedly with him, should also be arrested and punished.

He further pleaded for mercy, saying he has a young child, while also claiming that his wife was innocent.

When asked, co-accused Swapna Khatun also denied the allegations, stating that she had not committed any offence.

Special Public Prosecutor Azizur Rahman Dulu later requested the court to set Thursday as the date for final arguments, which the court approved. The hearing under Section 342 was then concluded.

Earlier, on Tuesday, 16 prosecution witnesses testified in the case, completing witness statements in a single day.

According to the case details, child Ramisa was raped and murdered on 19 May in Pallabi. After the killing, the prime accused Sohel Rana fled the scene by cutting the window grill of the room. Police later detained co-accused Swapna following information received through the national emergency service 999, while Sohel Rana was arrested from in front of Fatullah Police Station in Narayanganj.

The victim’s father filed a case with Pallabi Police Station.
