The government has withdrawn a senior bureaucrat from his workplace following the death of his 75-year-old mother, allegedly due to negligence.
Joint Secretary AKM Anisur Rahman, member (engineering and development) of the Mongla Port Authority, has been attached to the Ministry of Public Administration.
According to a notification issued by the ministry on Wednesday, the official concerned must be relieved from his current workplace and join the new posting by 4 June.
Otherwise, he will be considered automatically relieved (stand released) from the current post in the afternoon of 4 June, it added.
Earlier in the day, State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari said that action would be taken against the official under the Parents' Maintenance Act.
He also said that the necessary procedures, including recording statements from Anisur Rahman, would be followed.
On 31 May, police recovered the body of Nurjahan Begum, 75, from a residence in the capital’s Mirpur-11 area after receiving a call to the national emergency service 999.
Nurjahan Begum’s other son is a teacher at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), while her daughter works as a schoolteacher at a local school.
Following the media reports on the incident, the ministry initiated legal proceedings against her son, Anisur Rahman.
