Bustling trade at floating markets revives South Bengal’s agriculture and tourism economy around a century-old tradition
With the arrival of the monsoon, South Bengal takes on a refreshing new look. One of its main attractions is the vast guava orchards of Bhimruli, Kirtipasha, Atghar, Kuriana and the surrounding areas.
From July to September, the country’s largest guava-producing region transforms into a unique water kingdom covered in shades of green and gold. Every day, thousands of visitors from across the country flock to the area to enjoy orchards filled with fresh guavas, floating markets along the canals and scenic boat rides.
Spread across four unions in Jhalakathi and Pirojpur districts, this century-old guava-growing region is becoming increasingly popular as an important centre of agricultural activity and one of the country’s most attractive agro-tourism destinations.
At the first light of dawn, the canals of Bhimruli, Kirtipasha, Atghar and Kuriana come alive. Hundreds of small and large dinghies arrive carrying fresh green and ripe golden guavas. Both wholesale and retail trading take place directly from the boats, while seasonal guava markets are also set up along both banks of the canals.
Surrounded by natural beauty, the floating market stands as a unique example of Bangladesh’s agricultural heritage. It attracts both domestic and foreign tourists.
Local farmers Pulak Halder, Bimal Roy, Sujan Halder, Nazrul Howlader, Mosharraf Mallick and Nazrul Islam said that although heavy rainfall has created a risk of damage to some orchards this season, the overall yield remains satisfactory. Farmers are also receiving good prices in the market.
Guavas are currently selling for Tk 1,200 to Tk 1,500 per maund. From this region, the seasonal fruit is transported by boat and truck to different districts across the country.
Hundreds of tourists have been visiting the area every day since the beginning of the season. Some explore the orchards with their families, while others enjoy boat trips with friends. Many visitors also purchase fresh guavas directly from local farmers.
Tourism has created new employment opportunities through boat services, local food businesses, tour-guiding services and other small enterprises. These activities have given a fresh boost to the local economy.
Visitors from different parts of the country said that Bhimruli’s floating guava market, green waterways and unspoiled natural environment attract them repeatedly during the monsoon. They noted that such a remarkable combination of agriculture, nature and riverine life is rarely seen elsewhere in the country.
Jhalakathi Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Segufta Mehnaz said, “The floating guava market has become one of the country’s most attractive tourist destinations. The administration has taken necessary measures to ensure visitors’ safety, maintain a clean environment and facilitate smooth boat movement.”
She added, “A long-term plan has been undertaken to preserve and develop this tradition. Expanding agro-based tourism, developing the guava-processing industry and introducing effective branding could create new economic opportunities for Jhalakathi.”
“The guava of Jhalakathi is not merely a fruit. It represents the history, culture, lifestyle and dreams of the people of this region. Protecting farmers’ interests and strengthening tourism management are essential to sustaining this tradition,” she said.
During the three monsoon months, the vast guava orchards of Bhimruli, Atghar, Kuriana and nearby areas become a remarkable meeting place of nature, agriculture and tourism. This century-old agricultural tradition is now not only a driving force of the local economy but also a shining symbol of Bangladesh’s rural beauty and agro-based tourism.
