Chattogram Shipyard Accident: Death toll rises to 8

The death toll from the accident at a shipbreaking yard in Bhatiary of Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram has risen to eight, while several others have sustained injuries.

Earlier, several workers were killed after inhaling leaked gas following an incident at the shipbreaking yard on Friday morning.

The identities of the victims could not be confirmed immediately after the incident.

The injured workers, who suffered burn injuries, are receiving treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Several of them are reportedly in critical condition.

The shipyard's Managing Director, Ferdous Wahid, confirmed the incident but could not immediately provide the identities of the workers or details about the cause of the accident.

According to police and local sources, the workers were carrying out their routine duties at the yard on Friday morning when a loud explosion suddenly occurred, killing five people initially.

Fire Service personnel, with assistance from local residents, rescued the injured workers and took them to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment.
