The people across the globe are observing Mother’s Day today, a special occasion celebrated every year on the second Sunday of May to honor the unconditional love, sacrifice, and dedication of mothers.
The day serves as an opportunity for children and families to express gratitude and appreciation for the invaluable role mothers play in their lives.
Mother’s Day traces its origins to Anna Reeves Jarvis of Philadelphia in the United States, who worked to reduce child mortality and raise awareness about mothers’ health. In 1907, her daughter Anna Jarvis arranged a small memorial event in honor of her mother.
She initiated the observance to recognize the sacrifices mothers make and their tireless devotion to their children. That day later became known as Mother’s Day.
In 1914, then-US President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day. Since then, the occasion has been celebrated in many countries around the world.
Anna Jarvis believed mothers deserved recognition for their selfless sacrifices for their families. Due to her efforts, the first official Mother’s Day observance took place in West Virginia in 1908.
A mother remains the purest symbol of unconditional love. Mother’s Day is dedicated to expressing respect, gratitude, and affection toward mothers. In continuation of that tradition, World Mother’s Day is also being observed in Bangladesh today.
Mother’s Day is not merely a formality; it is a day to express heartfelt gratitude. Amid the busyness of life, people today will pause to say, “We love you, Mom.”
Mothers spend sleepless nights for their children, stay beside them in illness, and silently bear their own hardships. This day serves as a special opportunity to express those unspoken feelings of love and appreciation for mothers.
