Rabindranath Tagore in the Eyes of Today’s Generation: A New Reading of Globalization, Humanity and Culture

Rabindranath Tagore stands as one of the most luminous figures in the history of Bengali literature and global culture. He was not merely a poet; he was a philosopher, educator, composer, playwright, and above all, a visionary of universal humanism. Each year, his birth anniversary invites us to reflect- not only to remember him, but to ask whether we truly understand his ideas, or simply confine him within ceremonial tributes and cultural programs.

The modern world is passing through a complex and transformative phase. Rapid technological advancement, the expansion of globalization, and the dominance of digital communication have brought people closer in distance, yet often farther apart in emotional and human connection. In such a context, Tagore’s philosophy becomes strikingly relevant once again.

Tagore’s idea of the “universal human” was profound and far ahead of its time. He believed that human identity transcends the narrow boundaries of nation, religion, and geography. In today’s globalized world, this vision appears more relevant than ever. However, globalization has also led to cultural homogenization and inequality in many cases. Tagore’s message offers a balanced path- embracing the world while preserving one’s own cultural roots.

Today’s younger generation is deeply immersed in technology. Smartphones, social media, and the internet shape their daily lives. Yet, amid this digital abundance, there is often a growing sense of isolation, loss of empathy, and weakening connection with nature. Tagore’s works consistently emphasize the harmony between humans and nature. From his poetry to his songs, especially in collections like Gitanjali, he portrays a deep spiritual and emotional bond with the natural world. If today’s youth engage with this perspective, they may rediscover a balance between technology and humanity.

In the field of education, Tagore’s ideas were revolutionary. He rejected rigid, book-centered learning and advocated for a system that nurtures creativity, freedom, and a close relationship with nature. His establishment of Santiniketan was a living example of this philosophy. In contrast, today’s education systems often prioritize exams, competition, and professional outcomes over holistic human development. Revisiting Tagore’s educational vision could inspire a more meaningful and humane approach to learning.

Culturally, Tagore championed originality and self-respect. He opposed blind imitation of foreign influences and encouraged individuals to cherish their own heritage while engaging with global cultures. In today’s context, where many young people are increasingly drawn toward foreign cultural trends at the expense of their own identity, Tagore’s perspective offers a necessary reminder of balance and authenticity.

It must be acknowledged, however, that for many young people today, Tagore feels distant. His language, style, and historical context may seem complex or less accessible. This gap is partly due to how his works are presented in modern education and cultural discourse. If we can reinterpret and present Tagore in contemporary forms- through modern language, media, and creative expression- he can once again resonate deeply with the younger generation.

Tagore’s literature teaches us how to love-love humanity, nature, and our homeland. His philosophy encourages tolerance, compassion, and openness. In a world increasingly divided by religious extremism, nationalism, and social inequality, his ideas offer a path toward unity and understanding.

Therefore, Tagore’s birth anniversary should not be limited to remembrance alone; it should be a moment of introspection. What have we learned from him? How much of his philosophy have we incorporated into our lives? These are the questions that truly honor his legacy.

Ultimately, Tagore never becomes outdated. Times change, generations evolve, but his ideas remain timeless. If today’s generation can rediscover him in a new light, they will find not just a poet, but a complete philosophy of life.

To truly know Tagore, one must go beyond reading his words-one must feel and experience them. Only then can the celebration of his birth anniversary become genuinely meaningful.
