A mild earthquake was felt in Rangpur and nearby areas in the northern region of Bangladesh on Saturday afternoon.
The tremor occurred at 3:10pm and measured 4.5 on the Richter scale.
Meteorologist Mustafizur Rahman of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) office in Rangpur confirmed the matter to journalists.
During the quake, local residents experienced brief panic, although no immediate reports of damage or casualties were received as the tremor lasted only a few seconds.
In a statement, BMD said the earthquake’s epicentre was in the Indian state of Assam. The epicentre was located about 271 kilometres north of the Seismic Centre of the department, based in the capital’s Agargaon.
