A new Bangladeshi film tracing the lives of marginalised women is set for release this Friday, with “Atar Bibi Lane” opening in cinemas nationwide on May 1.

Produced under the Times Media banner, the film has begun its promotional rollout. The official trailer, songs and poster were unveiled at a press conference at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) in Dhaka on Sunday, attended by cast, crew and industry figures.

Directed by Mijanur Rahman Labu, the film is based on his own story, screenplay and dialogue. The central role of Atar Bibi is played by Farzana Sumi, who described it as one of the most demanding performances of her career.

“This role was completely different from anything I’ve done before,” Sumi said, adding that she undertook extensive preparation to portray the character convincingly. Filming, she noted, was completed during Ramadan last year under demanding conditions.

“Atar Bibi Lane” follows a marginalised woman navigating harsh social realities. Despite her aspirations for a stable and dignified life, Atar Bibi is repeatedly deceived and pushed to the margins. The story charts her resistance to exploitation and her persistence amid systemic hardship.

Speaking at the event, Labu said the film was developed over a long period with careful attention to detail, expressing hope that audiences would connect with its themes.

Filming took place across multiple locations in Dhaka and beyond, including the Daulatdia brothel area, as well as parts of Rajbari, Goalanda and Faridpur, lending the film a grounded sense of place.

The ensemble cast also includes Mostafa Prokash, Rashed Mamun Apu, Ashish Khandaker, Elina Shammi, Sanzida Mila, Joyraj, Parvez Suman, Farhad Limon, Kazi Ujjal, Sokal and Simanto.
