Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Tuesday said a total of 14,500 new posts are being created in Bangladesh Police to strengthen the force.
Replying to a question from Madaripur-2 MP Jahandar Ali Miah in the Jatiya Sangsad, the minister said the new posts include 500 assistant superintendent of police (ASP), 4,000 sub-inspectors (unarmed) and 10,000 constables.
He said the current strength of Bangladesh Police stands at 218,554 posts. Of them, 207,745 are police personnel, 8,047 are non-police staff and 2,762 are non-police outsourcing posts.
The minister also said recruitment has already begun against 2,703 vacant constable posts since the current government assumed office. In addition, 2,000 assistant sub-inspectors (ASI) will be recruited directly.
Responding to another question from Cumilla-4 MP Hasnat Abdullah, the home minister said that since the current government took office, 464 murder cases and 666 rape cases have been filed across the country.
A total of 604 accused in murder cases and 530 in rape cases have been arrested, he said, adding that 11 accused in murder cases and 71 in rape cases have been released on bail.
He said the cases involving serious crimes like murder and rape are being investigated with utmost importance to ensure strict punishment for those responsible.
“Efforts are underway to collect proper evidence and submit charge sheets swiftly,” he added.
