Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has blamed the previous interim government for the recent outbreak of measles in the country and the shortage of vaccines.
He said that during the tenure of the interim government, measles vaccines for children were not imported from abroad, which he described as deeply unfortunate.
However, the incumbent government has quickly procured vaccines with the support of UNICEF and has set a target to vaccinate two crore children, he said.
The prime minister made these remarks while responding to a supplementary question during a session of the Jatiya Sangsad on Wednesday. The session was presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad.
Tarique said that a large number of kits have already arrived in the country, and efforts are underway to release those stuck at customs and airports.
Each kit can be used to conduct three tests, he added, assuring that the government is working swiftly to manage the situation.
