At least six people, including five members of the river police, were injured in a shooting incident during a raid in the Haripur area of Kushtia on the Padma River last night.
Confirming the incident, Pabna Superintendent of Police Md Anwar Zahid said a team from the Laxmikunda River Police Camp in Ishwardi, led by Camp-in-Charge Inspector Shafikul Islam, was carrying out routine patrol duties by boat when the attack occurred.
According to him, when the patrol reached Haripur point, a group of armed criminals suddenly opened fire, leaving five police personnel and the boatman injured.
A rescue team from Pabna police later retrieved the injured from the river and admitted them to Pabna General Hospital. One of the officers sustained a serious gunshot wound.
The injured have been identified as Inspector Shafikul Islam, and police constables Inamul Haque, Shahinur Haque, Nazmul Hasan and Manik Miah. The identity of the boatman has not yet been confirmed.
Shahinur Haque suffered a critical injury to his eye and was transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Police said senior authorities have been informed, and a joint operation involving Pabna Police, Kushtia Police and River Police is being planned to apprehend the attackers.
