The Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik Samity (BSPMS) has instructed transport owners not to raise bus fares without government approval, despite a recent increase in diesel prices.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Secretary General Md Saiful Alam said operators must not charge any fare above the existing rate until authorities announce a final decision.
The association urged all transport owners and workers across the country to follow the directive strictly on every route.
At the same time, the body highlighted mounting pressure on the transport sector. It said a Tk15 per litre rise in diesel prices has significantly increased operating costs.
The association also noted that a stronger US dollar has pushed up the cost of spare parts and vehicle maintenance.
In view of the situation, the association called on the government to adjust fares in a realistic manner as soon as possible to help the sector avoid losses.
