Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to inaugurate a sports card and allowance distribution programme on Monday, under which an initial 500 athletes will receive financial support.
The announcement was made on Saturday by State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque at a press conference held at the National Sports Council.
Aminul said that athletes who have established themselves at the national level and represented Bangladesh for a long time will be brought under a structured allowance system.
“To honour their contributions, sports cards will be issued to them,” he said.
The state minister also noted that athletes who have won medals will be included in a pay structure and provided with regular sports allowances as part of the initiative.
Regarding future plans, he said the ministry intends to appoint sports officers in 495 upazilas across the country. He also added that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has taken initiatives to recover playgrounds in different parts of Dhaka that are currently under illegal occupation.
