DU student assault: Victim’s mother files case naming 10

Published : Tuesday, 10 March, 2026 at 5:01 PM  Count : 37

The mother of Dhaka University student Rahid Khan Pavel, who was recently assaulted, has filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station naming 10 students of the university as accused.

Pavel’s mother, Parveen Akter, submitted the complaint last night. The case also mentions another 10 to 15 unidentified individuals as accused.

Sub-Inspector Mainul Islam of Shahbagh Police Station confirmed that the case has been filed.

According to the complaint, the accused include Md Saifullah (Management, 2020–21 session, Mohsin Hall), Hasib Al Islam (Sociology, 2020–21 session, proposed Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall), Saeed Afridi (Sanskrit, 2022–23 session, Mohsin Hall), Riad Mal (International Relations, 2021–22 session, Surya Sen Hall), Sardar Nadim Mohammad Shuvo (Philosophy, 2021–22 session, Surya Sen Hall), Md Sakib (International Relations, 2021–22 session, Bir Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall), Forkan Uddin Mahi (Sociology, 2020–21 session, proposed Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall), Bayezid Hasan (Philosophy, 2021–22 session, Mohsin Hall), Himel (Health Economics, 2020–21 session, Surya Sen Hall), and Sajib Hossain (Applied Mathematics, 2021–22 session, Shahidullah Hall).

Pavel, a student of the Philosophy Department from the 2020–21 academic session and a resident of Bir Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, was allegedly beaten and left in front of Shahbagh Police Station early yesterday after being labelled a member of the now-banned Bangladesh Chhatra League.

The complaint states that Pavel was first beaten in front of the Shaheed Minar of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), then again in front of SM Hall of Dhaka University. He was allegedly assaulted a third time in front of Shahbagh Police Station.

According to the complaint, the accused struck Pavel on the head with iron rods and steel pipes. One of his fingers was broken, and he suffered a serious injury to his left ear. He also sustained injuries to various parts of his body.

The complaint further alleges that the accused took Pavel’s smartphone, Tk 5,000 in cash, a motorcycle, and an ATM card during the assault.

Following the incident, officials of Shahbagh Police Station, with assistance from the Dhaka University proctorial team, admitted Pavel to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Responding to the allegations, Saifullah told, “All the allegations are false.”

“We did not even touch him. We took him to the police station to keep him safe,” he said.

“Pavel will admit that I was not there from the beginning. I did not touch him either. There is no chance that it happened under my leadership,” he added.

Saifullah further said, “Although Pavel claims to be a general student, he serves the purpose of Chhatra League on the campus.”

He claimed that while Pavel might have been punched due to a misunderstanding, the allegations of beating him with pipes, rods, and bike chains are not true.

Md Sakib, one of the accused and a leader of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, said, “This is a conspiracy against us. We will fight this legally.”

After the July mass uprising, Dhaka University authorities issued show-cause notices to 403 students for their alleged involvement in attacks on students. Pavel’s name was not on that list.
