Hafizuddin Ahmed, a member of parliament from the Bhola constituency in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, was elected Speaker while MP from Netrakona-1 Kaiser Kamal was unanimously elected deputy speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad.
The first sitting of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad began on Thursday with senior MP Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain in the chair as the speaker and deputy speaker of the previous parliament remained absent.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman proposed Mosharraf’s name to preside over the session and MP Fakhrul Islam Alamgir supported the proposal.
Mosharraf then announced the election of the speaker in the House.
Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni proposed the name of Hafizuddin Ahmed for the post of speaker and MP Rakibul Islam from Khulna-3 supported it.
MP from Natore-2 Ruhul Quddus Talukdar Dulu proposed the name of Kaiser Kamal for the post of deputy speaker and MP from Lakshmipur-4 ABM Ashraf Uddin Nizam supported the proposal.
Later, the newly elected Speaker Hafizuddin Ahmed and Deputy Speaker Kaiser Kamal took oath at the president’s chamber of the Jatiya Sangsad. President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath.
