Barrister Rumeen Farhana, BNP's assistant international affairs secretary, today collected nomination papers to contest the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election as an independent candidate from Brahmanbaria-2, a seat the party has left to an alliance partner.
The nomination papers were collected on her behalf around 1:30pm from the office of the assistant returning officer and Sarail upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), said UNO Md Abubakor Sarkar.
Former Sarail upazila Jubo Dal organising secretary Ali Hossain collected the papers.
Ali said that the next course of action would be decided by Rumeen.
Several hundred current and former leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated bodies, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal, from Sarail and Ashuganj upazilas were present at the time.
As of 3:45pm, nomination papers had been collected for eight candidates from the constituency.
Brahmanbaria-2 comprises Sarail and Ashuganj upazilas, along with Budhanti and Chandura unions of Bijoynagar upazila. Several BNP leaders, including Rumeen Farhana, had long sought party nomination for the seat.
However, BNP ceded the constituency to its alliance partner Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam Bangladesh. Under the alliance arrangement, the party's vice-president Maulana Junayed Al Habib is contesting the seat with BNP's support.
