Bangladesh Army has accused certain groups of spreading false and misleading information on social media regarding the arrest of former Chhatra Dal general secretary Enamul Haque Molla, 48, and six of his associates in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur.
At a press briefing held at the temporary army camp in Gazipur's Rice Research Institute this morning, Lt Col Lutfar Rahman, commander of the 14th Field Regiment Artillery, confirmed the arrests and warned against attempts to politicise the incident.
"The army is not for or against any person or party. The Bangladesh Army is always for justice and against injustice; the army is for the country. Those who are spreading misinformation in this regard and encouraging it may also be involved in terrorist activities in some way or the other. We are seriously investigating that matter, and strict legal action will be taken against them based on evidence," he said.
Lt Col Rahman said that a joint operation was conducted in Barmi union of Sreepur upazila early on Thursday, under the overall supervision of the Gazipur Army Camp, with direct assistance from the police and Rab. Acting on specific intelligence and with the help of locals, Enamul was arrested from inside the water tank of his own house.
Lt Col Rahman described Enamul as a warranted accused and the leader of a gang involved in illegal sand mining and robbery.
Multiple robbery and weapons cases are pending against Enamul at Sreepur Police Station, with warrants already issued in some of them, Lt Col Rahman added.
