Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, on Wednesday afternoon accused Sheikh Hasina of being the deadliest figure of the 21st century. He made the remarks during a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.
Alam said, “No one in the 21st century has committed more killings or human rights violations than Sheikh Hasina.”
He referred to recent interviews given by Hasina to the UK-based The Independent, Reuters, and AFP, stressing that those conducting the interviews should remember her past actions, including fleeing to India during the student-popular uprising.
Alam noted that reports by the United Nations clearly document Hasina’s human rights violations. He added that two international media outlets also reported that she allegedly gave orders for killings.
When asked if Hasina’s comment about boycotting elections if the Awami League did not get opportunities could create problems, Alam said the authorities do not see any issue. “We have not witnessed any such situation. The Awami League itself is not visible in any significant capacity; only small processions occur sporadically, sometimes with minor financial support,” he said.
Alam also criticised one local news outlet for presenting one-sided claims supporting Hasina’s party while ignoring reports of severe human rights violations. He said, “It is unfortunate that some reports highlight 400 deaths claimed by the Awami League without contesting them.”
He further alleged that Hasina’s supporters have hired expensive UK law firms using national funds for such activities, and he criticised local promotion of these efforts.
