Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday cautioned that the upcoming 13th parliamentary election may face significant challenges, as forces from both inside and outside the country could attempt to disrupt the polls.

“Many powerful forces, not minor ones, will try to spoil the election. Sudden attacks may occur, making this election particularly challenging. No matter the obstacles, we must overcome them,” he said, according to Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, during a high-level meeting on election preparations.

The meeting, chaired by Prof Yunus, was held at State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka.

Shafiqul Alam briefed reporters afterward at Foreign Service Academy.

Key topics discussed included the election-time posting of field-level officials, tackling misinformation and disinformation on social media, training of election officials and security arrangements.

Prof Yunus specifically warned of planned social media propaganda during the election. “Various types of propaganda will be carried out in a coordinated manner from both inside and outside the country to spoil the election,” he said.

He also highlighted the potential circulation of AI-generated images and videos online and stressed the need for immediate action to prevent their spread.

The Chief Adviser emphasized the importance of public awareness to ensure a fair and festive election.

He urged citizens to understand electoral guidelines, polling station procedures, voting methods and the proper response to any disturbances.

In this context, Prof Yunus recommended that the Election Commission, in collaboration with Ministry of Cultural Affairs, produce and widely disseminate TVCs, documentaries and short videos on YouTube and social media to help voters prepare in advance.
