An eight-member Turkish team that came to Bangladesh to assist with the investigation into the Dhaka airport fire has left the country after completing its work.
The team is expected to submit its report within two to three days, Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin said today.
He added that the government is preparing its own report, which will be published soon. According to him, the government report will be treated as the main one.
A large fire broke out at the import cargo complex of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on October 18. It was brought under control by 37 firefighting units, with support from the army, air force and navy.
The blaze destroyed imported goods, particularly those meant for the apparel and pharmaceutical industries.
Top garment manufacturers estimate losses of at least $1 billion. They said disruptions caused by the fire to the supply of raw materials could delay production in the ready-made garment and pharmaceutical sectors by up to two months.
Soon after the fire, authorities said experts from the UK, Australia, Turkey and China had been invited to help with the investigation.
Speaking to journalists at the Riya Gope Women's Sports Complex in Dhanmondi area of the capital, the commerce adviser said goods are now being released from the airport cargo complex through alternative arrangements and that normal operations are expected to resume soon.
The airport blaze followed two major factory fires in Dhaka and port city Chattogram earlier this month. The factory fire in Dhaka killed at least 16 people.
