Miscreants vandalized two idols at the Sri Sri Raksha Kali temple at Swarupdaha Palpara of Mirpur upazila in Kushtia on Sunday night.
The attackers also removed the temple’s IP camera and its memory card.
Temple authorities and police said that the perpetrators broke the hands and neck of the Kartik idol and the hands and crown of the Saraswati idol. The swan and peacock, symbolic vehicles of the two idols, were also damaged. The incident likely occurred during heavy rain between 8:00 pm and 8:30 pm.
Temple servant Badal Kumar Dey said, “We have been organizing Durga Puja here for three years. This incident has thrown us into panic amidst the festive atmosphere.” Temple secretary Srivas Kumar Dey added that they had met with the Superintendent of Police and would soon decide on the next steps.
Mirpur Police Station OC Mominul Islam said no arrests have been made yet. “We have not received a formal complaint, but the investigation is ongoing at full speed,” he said.
Kushtia Deputy Commissioner Abu Hasnat Mohammad Arefin visited the temple on Monday morning and promised legal action after a proper investigation.
He also confirmed that new cameras have been installed and Ansar members deployed for round-the-clock security. The situation is now under control.
