Temporary workers working in tea gardens in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar, held a demonstration and rally to protest wage discrimination.

On Monday (September 1, 2025) morning, more than a hundred temporary workers from Khejurichara and Phuskuri tea gardens gathered at the factory premises of Khejurichara tea gardens in the upazila and participated in a rally after the protest procession. During this time, they raised various slogans demanding equal wages to permanent workers. The leaders said that the movement will continue until the demands are met.

Temporary tea workers participating in the protest complained, "We work the same way as permanent workers. However, while permanent workers get a daily wage of 187 taka, we are paid only 120 taka. Many times we are not even taken to work regularly. We do not get ration and other legal benefits. Far from bearing the cost of children's education, it is not possible to run a family on 120 taka. Living a human and dignified life is just a dream. Complaining about this is also dangerous, and we are not made permanent."

When asked about the protest movement of temporary tea workers in Sreemangal in protest of wage inequality, Comrade Syed Amiruzzaman, leader of the Workers' Party of Bangladesh, said in a response, "Determine a reasonable wage suitable for a dignified life for tea workers through dialogue. No excuses or delays are acceptable in this regard. Workers do not want anyone's mercy. They want full remuneration for the value they add to the economy by working 8 hours a day."

When asked about the protest movement of temporary tea workers in Sreemangal against wage discrimination, Poresh Kalindi, Finance Secretary of Bangladesh Tea Workers Union, said, "According to the law, this demand is logical and relevant. The issue of equal wages has also been mentioned in the agreement. But it is not implemented in many gardens. As a result, the workers are continuously becoming angry. All the garden parties and the concerned government departments must come forward in this regard."
