Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser (south) of the National Citizen Party, today alleged that the Awami League is using the fighter jet crash at Milestone College in Uttara, as a pretext for reorganising itself.
He said, "We thought fascism had fallen. But the Awami League is now regrouping by capitalising on the unfortunate Milestone incident."
Hasnat said this while addressing a rally at the Pouroshabha Mukta Mancha in Brahmanbaria town around 1:00pm. The event was a part of NCP's month-long programme, "July March to Rebuild the Nation".
"I urge all anti-fascist political parties in Bangladesh to unite against the Awami League in the interest of democracy and national interest. The reforms we proposed must be implemented immediately to ensure a credible election. Before that, visible judicial and structural reforms must be ensured," he said.
Regarding the healthcare system, Hasnat added, "In this country, if you go out, you have a risk of dying under a bus. If you go to a hospital, you may die from lack of treatment. You may die in a plane crash or a launch accident [trawler capsize] -- this state has never guaranteed the people a natural death. We demand the right to die naturally."
He further said, "We wanted the interim government to deliver a restructured state system. But regrettably, our former health minister held an honours degree in English, and the current adviser has an honours in Bangla. The health sector should have been run by skilled and competent individuals. Instead, it has been made a classic example of mismanagement under an unqualified adviser. The question is: are there no doctors in Bangladesh?"
"We wanted quality education, fair elections, and a democratic state. If we remain united, we can shape history. "We will rise above oppressive rule to build a Bangladesh founded on justice and equal rights."
Speaking at the rally, NCP Convener Nahid Islam said, "NCP will continue to press for reforms, justice, and a new constitution. Many political parties are now supporting reforms, -- even stepping beyond their political stance. We will push for the July Charter and July Declaration to be fulfilled by August 5."
NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossen said, "...The institutions of this country must be restructured through reforms, because over the past half century, they've been politicised."
Earlier in the morning, NCP leaders met with families of those killed and injured in the July-August mass uprising at the local Circuit House.
Around 11:00am, the party began its march from Kautoli intersection on the Cumilla-Sylhet highway, parading through Faruqi Park Road, Mourail, Government College intersection, and TA Road, covering key streets in the town.
Other central NCP leaders including Sarjis Alam, Nasiruddin Patwary, Tasnim Jara, and Samantha Sharmin were present at the event.
