We must create a culture of obeying traffic laws and discipline: Syed Amiruzzaman

"We need to create a culture of obeying traffic laws and discipline. What do we usually see? People travel to their destinations in risky vehicles and get into accidents. Of course, many accidents also occur due to irresponsibility and ignorance. In fact, to ensure a healthy, normal and safe journey, a medium-term sustainable integrated plan needs to be adopted."

Comrade Syed Amiruzzaman, member of the Moulvibazar District Editorial Board of the Workers' Party of Bangladesh, Editor of Rp News and prominent columnist, said these words as a special guest at the ceremony of distributing commemorative crests to meritorious people at the initiative of NISCHA in Sreemangal for their special role in preventing road accidents.

Nirapad Sarak Chai (NISCHA) has awarded commemorative crests to 40 people from Sreemangal in recognition of their special role in preventing road accidents.

The awards were presented to people from different walks of life, including doctors, police officers, teachers, human rights activists, journalists, and students, at a ceremony organized at the Nischar Sreemangal Upazila office on Friday (June 20, 2025) at 4:30 pm.

The event, organized under the chairmanship of Md. Amjad Hossain Rony, President of the Sreemangal Upazila Branch, and moderated by the acting secretary of the organization, Uttam Roy, was attended by Dr. Nazem Al Qureshi Rafat, Chairman of New Life Hospital and Advisor to the Nischa.

Senior member of Sreemangal Press Club, senior journalist and prominent columnist Comrade Syed Amiruzzaman and Inspector (TI) of Sreemangal Town and Traffic Police SM Jalal Uddin were present as special guests.

Among the honorees were:
Sreemangal Upazila Shop Employees Welfare Union (Reg. No. Chatta-2877) General Secretary, Daily Nabchetona and Daily Desh Bartam Newspaper Correspondent Md. Afzal Hossain Jony, New Life Hospital Chairman and Nischar Advisor Dr. Nazem Al Qureshi Rafat, TI SM Jalal Uddin, Journalists Nantu Roy, Jhalak Dutta, Safe the Future Foundation President Matiur Rahman Matin, former and current leaders of Nischa and others.

Eminent columnist Comrade Syed Amiruzzaman further said, "There is no coordination and continuity of effective initiatives to control road accidents. Most accidents are happening due to mismanagement of the road transport sector. This requires institutional management and structural reforms."

He said, "And therefore, I recommend that we increase the initiative to create skilled drivers; increase the capacity of BRTA; ensure unhindered implementation of traffic laws for transport owners-workers, passengers and pedestrians; stop low-speed vehicles on highways and build service roads for them; build road dividers on all highways in phases; use technology to control vehicle speed; make public transport better, more accessible and affordable; ensure strict monitoring systems; formulate and implement sustainable transport strategies; and run awareness campaigns on road safety through the media and social media."

In his speech as the chief guest, New Life Hospital Chairman and Nischa Advisor Dr. Najem Al Qureshi Rafat said, "To restore order on the roads, not only law enforcement is needed, but also social awareness and active participation. Nischa is working tirelessly out of that sense of responsibility."

He thanked the Nischa Sreemangal branch for organizing such an event and urged them to continue such initiatives in the future.

At the end of the ceremony, the organization presented mementos to all the honorees.
