Two people were arrested today in a case filed over the brutal torture of a woman after tying her to a coconut tree after allegedly failing to rape her in Brahmanbaria Sadar yesterday.

The arrestees are victims' brothers-in-law, confirmed Mohammad Mozaffar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station.

They were arrested this afternoon after the victim filed a complaint with the police station last night. The incident took place between 5:00pm to 8:00pm at her in-laws' house.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage in the local community.

According to the case statement, the woman is the wife of a Saudi expatriate. Her brother-in-law, had been sexually harassing her for a long time and often made sexual advances. When she repeatedly rejected his advances, he attempted to rape her on Monday. Failing which, he started beating her and others joined in. They tied her to a coconut tree in their yard and tortured her physically and mentally for hours.

When her children intervened, they too were physically assaulted, as per the case details.

The complaint also mentioned looting of gold ornaments and cash from her house.

"I was talking to my husband over the phone when they suddenly stormed into the room, dragged me by my hair to the yard, and started beating me. When my children tried to save me, they were also assaulted," said the victim while talking to reporter outside the police station last night.

"They tied me to a tree and tortured me for nearly three hours. Locals who heard my screams tried to intervene, but the attackers turned on them as well. Eventually, a local union parishad member rescued me and arranged treatment at the district hospital," she added.

After receiving primary care, the victim filed a complaint accusing seven, including her brothers-in-law, and three other unidentified people.

Contacted, OC Mozaffar Hossain said, "Based on a complaint last night, two people were arrested today. We are trying to apprehend the other accused."
