A former member of Jatiya Nagorik Committee (NCC) has been sent to jail in connection with a fraud case involving the embezzlement of funds from the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation.

Dilshad Afrin Pinky, 31, has recently been expelled from her position at NCC's Fatullah unit in Narayanganj.

The decision was made by Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jenifar Jerin following a bail hearing on Friday, in which the court denied her bail petition.

Sub-Inspector Mohammad Kamrul Hossain of Ramna Model Police Station, who is also the investigating officer in the case, presented Pinky before the court with a request to keep her in custody.

On behalf of the accused, her lawyer, former General Secretary of the Dhaka Bar Association, Hossain Ali Khan Hasan, sought bail.

After hearing both sides, the magistrate rejected the bail plea and ordered Pinky to be held in prison.

The fraud case was filed at Ramna Model Police Station on April 10 by Fatema Afrin Payel, legal officer of July Shaheed Smriti Foundation. Later, Pinky was arrested by police on Thursday night from Dhaka's Ramna area.

According to the complaint, Pinky allegedly took money from several individuals under false promises of financial aid from the foundation.

The case details reveal that Bulbul Sikder and Rakibul Sikder applied to the foundation claiming compensation as victims of the July uprising. Suspicious of their documents, the foundation summoned them for verification on March 21.

During questioning, the two admitted they were not injured in the student movement but had paid Dilshad Afrin Tk 10,000 to arrange verification of their medical records.

Further allegations state that Pinky accepted Tk 50,000 to have Rakibul's name included in the list of seriously injured individuals, along with an additional Tk 30,000 for other promised benefits. She also reportedly took Tk 50,000 from Hadisa Akter Happy, the widow of martyr Ahsan Kabir Sharif, on the pretext of securing Tk 2.5 lakh in aid from the foundation. Several other individuals also reported being defrauded in a similar manner.

Following these allegations, NCC officially expelled Dilshad Afrin Pinky from her post on April 8.
