Expressing satisfaction over the High Court's verdict in the case over the murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad, his mother, Rokeya Khatun, has demanded the swift execution of the sentence and the immediate arrest of the fugitive convicts.
"I demand the prompt execution of this verdict. If implemented, it will serve as a precedent for the future," said Rokeya Khatun.
She made these remarks while speaking to this correspondent in Kushtia town after the High Court today upheld the trial court's ruling, which sentenced 20 BUET students to death and five others to life imprisonment for their involvement in the murder.
The bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain delivered the judgement after accepting the death references and dismissing the appeals filed by the convicts.
Abrar's mother also called for the removal of politics from educational institutions, stating, "There is no need for politics in any government or private educational institution."
She further added, "People from all political affiliations demanded justice for my son's murder. It was a collective demand, and that's why I was confident that, in sha Allah, justice would be served."
On October 7, 2019, Abrar, a second-year student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was beaten to death by a group of Chhatra League activists in his dormitory.
A Dhaka court on December 8, 2021, sentenced 20 BUET students to death for their direct involvement in the murder.
The court also sentenced five other students to life imprisonment in the case.
