Three people, including two siblings, were killed, and another was injured after a speeding bus hit a battery-run rickshaw on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway in Chandanaish upazila this morning.
The deceased were identified as Rizvi Akter, 16, her younger brother Wakar Uddin Adil, 12, and the rickshaw driver Ruhul Amin, 45, said Shuvo Ranjan Chakma, officer-in-charge (OC) of Dohazari Highway Police Station.
The accident occurred around 9:00am when the rickshaw entered the highway from a feeder road near Dohajari Bazar. A Chattogram-bound Purabi Paribahan bus from Bandarban rammed into it, the OC said, quoting eyewitnesses.
Rizvi, a ninth grader, and Wakar, a class seven student at Dohajari Pathshala Public School and College, were on their way to a coaching centre from their house in Zamirjuri.
The rickshaw driver and Wakar died on the spot, while Rizvi and another passenger, ninth-grader Tushin Akhter, were rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where doctors declared Rizvi dead.
Following the accident, enraged locals blocked the highway, demanding a speed breaker at the spot, disrupting traffic for an hour. Police later convinced them to remove the barricade, restoring the vehicular movement.
The bus has been seized, but the driver and helper managed to flee, the OC said.
