Pickup accident in Moulvibazar: 2 tea workers killed, 18 injured

Two tea workers were killed, and 18 others injured, when a pickup truck lost control and overturned on the Dhaka-Sylhet regional highway in Moulvibazar's Sreemangal upazila today.

The deceased have been identified as Vishal, 19, and Hridoy Rabi Das, 32, both residents of Amrail Tea Garden, said Saifur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Satgaon Highway Police Outpost.

Quoting witnesses, the OC said that a pickup transporting workers from Amrail Tea Garden lost control and overturned near Dhalai (Bhanga), adjacent to th Satgaon Tea Garden Factory on the highway around 10:00am.

Samrat Kishore Poddar, a medical officer at the Sreemangal Upazila Health Complex, said that locals brought in 20 injured workers, eight of whom were in critical condition and referred to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital.

Later, Ahmed Faisal Zaman, resident medical officer of Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital, confirmed that two of the critically injured workers died on the way, while the remaining six are undergoing treatment.

The pickup truck has been seized, and legal proceedings are underway, the OC added.
