A local BNP leader was sued on charge of assaulting a journalist at Akhanagar Bazar in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila last night for "publishing a report against him."
Journalist Mamun Or Rashid, works as the district correspondent for Daily Desh Bangla, is undergoing treatment at Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital.
Later, the BNP leader, Jobaidur Haque Chowdhury, has been expelled from both his organisational position and primary membership of the BNP on "specific allegations of violating organisational discipline".
Jobaidur was the vice-president of Akhanagar union unit of BNP.
A press release issued this afternoon undersigned by BNP's Thakurgaon unit General Secretary Mirza Faisal Amin confirmed the expulsion.
Mamun filed the case against Jobaidur and some unknown people with Ruhea Police Station, said AKM Nazmul Quader, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Legal action will be taken soon, he added.
Mamun told media at the hospital that he had published a report on extortion by Jobaidur a few months ago.
"Since then, he has frequently threatened me over the phone," he said.
He added, "When I went to the bazar last night, he (Jobaidur) and his cohorts attacked me."
According to the eyewitnesses, Mamun was sitting at a tea stall in Kalibari Bazar under Akhanagar union when a group of people led by Jobaidur attacked him, leaving him injured.
Locals rescued him and took him to the hospital.
Hearing the news, journalists working for different newspapers and electronic media visited him at the hospital and staged a sit-in in front of the hospital protesting the attack.
They also demanded immediate arrest of the perpetrators.
