Awami League central office at Gulistan set on fire

Published : Thursday, 13 November, 2025 at 3:07 PM  Count : 37

A group of people set fire to the central office of the Awami League in Dhaka's Gulistan area today.

Eyewitnesses said some 10 to 15 people gathered wood, cartons, and other materials on the building's fourth floor and set fire them around 1:00pm.

The office has remained abandoned since August 5 last year, when agitated crowds looted and set fire to the building after the fall of the past regime.

The incident took place against the backdrop of the Awami League's online-announced "lockdown" programme.

Leaders and activists of the BNP, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolon Bangladesh, and other parties took positions at various points in the capital, with processions reported in some areas.

The Awami League announced the "lockdown" centring the verdict date announcement in a case filed with the International Crimes Tribunal over alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising involving ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and two others.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 today fixed November 17 for delivering the verdict.

On May 12 this year, the interim government banned all activities of the Awami League and its associated and affiliated organisations, on allegations of killings, genocide, crimes against humanity, and other grave offences during the July uprising.
