Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced the formation of a separate 'Cyber Security Unit' next week to increase the capacity of the police to combat cybercrime.
The Home Minister made this announcement while speaking as the chief guest at the 'Police Medal Award Ceremony' of Police Week 2026 on Saturday.
At that time, the Home Minister said, “This new 'Cyber Security Unit' will be run under the leadership of an officer of the rank of Additional Inspector General of Police (Additional IGP).”
He also said that if this post does not exist at the police headquarters, it will be newly created.
The Home Minister said, “The branches of the new Cyber Security Unit will be at the metro, division and district levels. The units at the police station and district levels will have modern equipment. Large-scale forensic labs and other necessary support will be kept at the headquarters and division levels.”
“I have given instructions a few weeks ago to formulate the projects. Those that will be complex will come to the center. Those that can be analyzed at the police station, district and divisional levels will be there,” he said.
Salahuddin Ahmed said that the crimes that are happening around cyberspace are a feature of modern crime trends.
Stating that up to 44 percent of crimes in some countries are cyber or scam-based, he said that this is why we have to give importance to it.
The Home Minister presented PPM and BPM medals to 98 police members at the event.
Senior secretary of the Home Ministry Manjur Morshed Chowdhury, inspector general of police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir and other senior police officials were present at the event.
