The Election Commission is considering holding local government elections in January after the annual examinations, instead of November and December, as students will be busy with their examinations.
Election Commissioner (EC) Anwarul Islam Sarker told reporters this at the Election Commission building on Thursday.
He said, “There will be no voting in November and December because of the annual examinations. I hope local government elections will begin in January after the exams.”
The Election Commissioner said members of the law enforcement agencies are deployed during public examinations. So, it is difficult to hold elections at that time.
He said there has been no exchange of letters with the government over the local government elections. The commission has asked the government to provide a list of local government bodies that are ready for elections.
Anwarul Islam Sarker said the election dates were changed based on practical considerations.
