Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, a senior presidium member of the activity-banned Awami League and a cousin of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, will act as the party’s president in her absence, Hasina has said.

In an interview with Kolkata-based The Wall, Hasina said Selim, being the senior-most member of the party’s presidium, would perform the duties of the Awami League president in her absence.

‘Now Sheikh Selim is the senior most presidium member. He will serve as the president in my absence,’ Hasina told The Wall.

Hasina has served as the president of the Bangladesh Awami League since February 16, 1981.

She fled to India after a student-led mass uprising ousted her from power in August 2024.

A BBC Bangla commentary last month said Hasina had firmly rejected India’s proposal for a minor or temporary change in the leadership of the Awami League.
