Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman has been arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) police over allegations of obstructing government officials and creating disorder at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
DB chief Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest on Friday (October 2) evening.
A case was filed against Akhtaruzzaman with Airport Police Station earlier in the day over the allegations. Airport security officer Md Shahriar Alam Sajib filed the case under Sections 186, 189, 294, 323, 352, 353, 504 and 506 of the Penal Code.
According to the case statement, tension broke out around 10:30AM on Thursday (October 1) at the baggage belt area No. 8 after a shortage of trolleys caused delays in collecting luggage from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight arriving from Medina.
The statement says Airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad went to the spot at the request of Dhaka-5 MP Mohammad Kamal Hossain and was trying to calm the situation.
Akhtaruzzaman allegedly approached him, used abusive language, threatened to assault him and asked him to leave the airport, according to the case statement.
It further alleges that protocol assistants accompanying Akhtaruzzaman were recording videos in a restricted Key Point Installation (KPI) area. When security supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin asked them to stop recording, Akhtaruzzaman allegedly behaved inappropriately, used abusive language and physically assaulted him.
The case statement also alleges that bottles of Zamzam water collected by passengers were thrown from trolleys and damaged, while Akhtaruzzaman also behaved aggressively towards a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
A Dhaka court has directed the investigating officer to submit the investigation report by November 10. Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir passed the order after the case statement was produced before the court on Friday.
Airport Police Station SI Majedul Islam is investigating the case.
Akhtaruzzaman joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on December 13, 2025.
