A fire that broke out at a yarn warehouse of DBL Group and a carton warehouse of Supreme Garments at Kashimpur in Gazipur was brought under control at about 1:50 pm on Saturday.
Fire Service and Civil Defence officials received information about the fire at 10:14 am and reached the scene at 10:25 am.
Nine firefighting units worked to bring the blaze under control, said Kazi Nazmuzzaman, assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence.
He said the fire spread rapidly as yarn and cartons were highly flammable. An investigation committee would be formed to determine the cause of the fire, he added.
Saiful Alam Chowdhury, deputy assistant director of Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence, said a lack of water and narrow roads in the Kashimpur area had made firefighting difficult.
‘As we know, one of the biggest challenges in Kashimpur area is the lack of water. The roads are narrow that has made it difficult for fire service vehicles to enter,’ he said.
‘At the same time, you can see how the smoke is moving in that direction. The wind is also a factor contributing to the spread of the fire. Anyway, we are trying our best to tackle the situation,’ he added.
He said many industrial units in the surrounding area lacked adequate water supplies.
However, the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
No casualties have been reported so far.
