Measles: Death toll reaches 890 as 5 more children die in 24hrs

Five more children died from measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours until 8am today (13 August), taking Bangladesh's combined tally of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths to 890.

Of the total, 791 deaths are classified as suspected measles deaths, while 99 have been laboratory-confirmed, according to data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The latest update also recorded 951 new suspected measles cases, raising the cumulative number of suspected cases nationwide to 140,076.

Meanwhile, 74 new laboratory-confirmed cases were reported during the period, taking the total number of confirmed measles infections to 17,543.

Since 15 March, a total of 121,908 patients with suspected measles have been hospitalised across the country, according to the DGHS.

Of them, 117,690 have recovered, while health authorities continue to monitor suspected and confirmed cases nationwide.
