Severe gridlock hits Dhaka airport road

Severe traffic congestion on Dhaka’s Airport Road caused major disruption for thousands of office-goers on Sunday morning.

The gridlock began around 8:30am near Kuril Bishwa Road and later extended towards Banani and Kakoli. Long queues of vehicles were also reported from ECB Chattar through the Matikata Flyover.

Traffic movement from Kuril towards the airport remained comparatively normal. However, heavy congestion developed on the stretches from Banani-Kakoli to Kuril, along the Matikata Flyover, and from ECB Chattar to Kurmitola General Hospital.

A passenger said, “If buses pick up and drop off passengers at designated places and drivers follow lane discipline, such traffic jams can be largely avoided.”

Those concerned said that on this one of the busiest roads in the capital, traffic jams have become a daily occurrence due to illegal parking of buses and private cars on both sides of the road, passengers picking up and dropping off outside the designated stops, and violation of traffic laws. They believe that this problem will not be solved soon unless effective supervision and traffic management are strengthened.
