The University of Dhaka authorities have suspended three teachers accused of supporting the Awami League and threatening students during the July mass uprising in 2024.

The teachers are Prof Shibli Rubayat-Ul-Islam of the Department of Banking and Insurance, Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah of the Department of Public Administration, and Prof AKM Jamal Uddin of the Department of Sociology.

The decision was taken at a meeting of DU syndicate, the highest decision-making body of the university, held last night with Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam in the chair.

The syndicate also relieved two other teachers of academic duties on a temporary basis.

Among them is Prof Mohammad Azmal Hossain Bhuiyan of the Department of Botany, who was suspended from academic activities over his alleged involvement in incidents related to the July uprising.

Another teacher, Tashrik-i-Habib, who gained attention on social media for his musical performances, was also relieved of academic duties following complaints from teachers and students of his department.

Sources said the syndicate approved a recommendation from the academic committee of the Bangla Department to remove Tashrik from academic activities. Allegations against him included tarnishing the university's image through his activities on social media.

In addition, former Chhatra League leader and deputy registrar of the university, Lovlu Molla Shishir, was suspended over his alleged controversial role during the July uprising.

The meeting also discussed the status of the 2019 Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) election.

The syndicate decided to cancel the position of general secretary (GS) held by Golam Rabbani, who was elected from the Chhatra League panel in the 2019 Ducsu polls, and referred the matter to the university's legal adviser for an opinion on considering former GS candidate Rashed Khan for the post.

In November last year, the university's Academic Council recommended the cancellation of Rabbani's admission to the MPhil programme, citing procedural irregularities, and declared his election as Ducsu GS in 2019 invalid.
