Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman has said the court will decide whether the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, will be formally banned as a political party.
“The decision on the Awami League will be taken by the International Crimes Tribunal,” he told reporters at the weekly press briefing at the Department of Information in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Zahed said the issue would be decided after the tribunal completes the trial over allegations of crimes against humanity.
He said the Awami League’s activities would remain banned under the Anti-Terrorism Act while the matter is under trial.
“If the party tries to take to the streets with any programme, it will be a violation of the law and the government will take necessary action,” he said.
The adviser said political parties must operate within democratic norms and legal standards. He said popular support alone could not give any party an unrestricted right to carry out political activities if it violated those basic principles.
Zahed said the final decision on the Awami League would come through the judicial process and the government would accept the court’s decision.
The government banned all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations in May 2025 under the amended Anti-Terrorism Act until the completion of proceedings against the party and its leaders at the International Crimes Tribunal.
